Maharashtra Assembly Seeks Ban on Analogue Cheese and Paneer

Report

Mumbai: BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute has called for a ban on analogue cheese and paneer in Maharashtra, citing serious food safety risks. Speaking in the state assembly, he warned that these synthetic substitutes—made from vegetable oils, starches, and emulsifiers instead of milk—could lead to severe health issues, including cancer and liver cirrhosis.

Lack of Regulation and Enforcement

Pachpute accused authorities of failing to enforce FSSAI labeling regulations, stating that many vendors sell analogue cheese and paneer without proper labeling. He noted that while FSSAI permits the sale of these products with proper labeling, compliance remains poor in the state. He urged officials to conduct stricter inspections, enhance vigilance, and enforce border checks to prevent the inflow of such products from neighboring states.

Government Assures Action

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, stating that some businesses were “playing with people’s lives.” He assured that the government would convene a meeting with relevant departments and legislators to discuss necessary actions, including stricter regulations and possible legal measures to curb the sale of these products.
