Public Outrage Over School’s Unhygienic Food Practices in Northeastern China

Report

A school in northeastern China sparked public outrage by serving students leftovers stored in containers meant for dog food. Parents at Wulidianzi School in Huanren County, Liaoning Province, discovered this alarming practice earlier this month after several students fell ill and vomited after consuming the food.

Parents React with Anger and Disbelief

Concerned parents demanded answers and viewed CCTV footage from the school canteen, although the school prohibited them from recording it. The footage revealed staff collecting leftover food from older students and placing it in a bucket intended for dog food. Shortly after, the staff served the same food to younger students during their mealtimes. Parents watching the footage became visibly upset. One mother asked, “I want to ask the headmaster, you also have a child. Would you let your child eat this kind of food?”

Local Authorities Launch Investigation

Local authorities swiftly formed an investigative team to examine the incident, which has caused outrage on mainland social media. Many users condemned the school’s actions. “They are not our enemies; they are our kids, the future of our country. How dare you give them such food?” one netizen wrote. Others called for severe punishment for both the school and the staff involved. “We should make those who violate food safety rules pay a high price, otherwise, they won’t be deterred,” said another commenter. A third user suggested that the school canteen’s surveillance system should connect to parents’ mobile phones, enabling stricter monitoring.

Food Safety Incidents in Chinese Educational Institutions

Food safety incidents in Chinese educational institutions have gained significant attention in recent years. Last year, a college in Jiangxi province made headlines when a student discovered a mouse head in their canteen meal. The institution initially claimed it was a duck head, but investigations later confirmed it was a mouse. Authorities imposed severe disciplinary action on the college administration following the discovery.
