Overview
Illegal meat shops are rapidly increasing in the Haripad region, Alappuzha, Kerala with numerous outlets operating without licenses or inspections in both urban and rural areas. These unregulated butcher shops capitalize on rising meat demand, which has become a staple for many households. Allegations also suggest these shops may be selling meat from sick and dead animals.
Widespread Violations of Food Safety Laws
Running a legal meat shop requires a license from local authorities and a health department certification for slaughtered animals. Yet, many illegal meat shops sidestep these regulations, reportedly with the involvement of some officials. Accusations claim that meat traders buy sick or dead animals from local owners, transporting carcasses overnight to be processed and sold as fresh meat by morning.
Surge in Unlicensed Butcher Shops
Numerous unlicensed butcher shops operate in areas around Haripad, such as Danapady, Kumarapuram, Thamallackal, Karuvatta, Pallipad, and Cheruthana. Pushcart meat vendors have also set up along the national highway. These outlets, which typically operate from early morning until 10 PM, complicate enforcement efforts. Additionally, meat scraps left near highways have aggravated the stray dog issue, causing a surge in dog bite incidents in Haripad, Danapady, and Kumarapuram in recent weeks.
Outdated and Inaccurate Weighing Equipment
Beyond hygiene and safety, local butchers report outdated weighing equipment, which leads to inaccuracies when selling meat. This mix of unlicensed operations, poor sanitary practices, and weak regulatory oversight is amplifying public health and safety risks across the Haripad region
