key Update
A suspected food poisoning incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur hospitalised at least nine members of the same family after they allegedly consumed watermelon and noodles at their home in Malav village under the Belipar police station area. The incident reportedly occurred on May 14. Soon after eating, family members, including children and elderly relatives, developed stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, chills, and breathing discomfort.
Doctors admitted the patients to Gorakhpur District Hospital and began emergency treatment immediately. Doctors later discharged one child, while they continue to monitor the remaining patients, especially elderly family members. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether contaminated watermelon, unsafe water, poor food storage, or another toxic substance caused the illness. Medical teams will examine food samples and inspect kitchen hygiene conditions before confirming the exact cause.

Hospital officials said severe dehydration caused by repeated vomiting and diarrhoea became a major concern during treatment. Doctors also advised people to avoid consuming cut fruits exposed to extreme heat and to check the quality and storage conditions of packaged foods before consumption.
Summer Heat Raises Food Safety Risks
Health experts warned that high summer temperatures can rapidly increase bacterial growth in cut fruits and cooked food if stored improperly. The incident has once again raised concerns about food safety during summer, especially amid recent reports of suspected watermelon-related food poisoning cases from other parts of India, including Chhattisgarh. Experts urged consumers to wash fruits properly, avoid stale food, and seek immediate medical attention if food poisoning symptoms appear.
