Food Poisoning Outbreak Affects 200 at Memorial Event in Assam’s Golaghat District

Approximately 200 individuals fell ill from food poisoning after consuming snacks at a memorial event in Assam’s Golaghat district, officials reported on Sunday. The incident occurred on Saturday evening during a gathering held in memory of Pradip Gogoi’s mother in Pasghoria village, located in the Uriamghat area of Sarupathar.

An official stated that the attendees received traditional ‘Jalpan,’ which included snacks made from puffed rice and cream. After eating, attendees began to report symptoms such as stomach pain, headaches, vomiting, and diarrhoea. The official noted that 53 individuals were promptly admitted to the Community Health Centre in Sarupathar and the Public Health Centre in Uriamghat. Among those admitted, two individuals required further medical care and were transferred to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.

Official Statement

The official confirmed that the victims are in stable condition, with several being discharged after treatment. He added that approximately 150 individuals with mild symptoms are currently recovering at home and being monitored.

BJP MLA Biswajit Phukan from Sarupathar visited the hospital to check on the well-being of the affected individuals. He stated that a food inspector would visit the village to investigate the cause of the food poisoning, as per the district administration’s information.

Phukan also announced that a medical camp has been set up in the village to conduct health checkups for residents. Medical teams have been dispatched to the homes of all attendees to closely monitor their health status. He mentioned that none of the individuals were showing severe symptoms.
