Food Poisoning Incident at Newly Opened Hotel in Koothattukulam: Investigation Underway

Food Poisoning at Newly Opened Hotel

Six individuals, including students from St. John’s Higher Secondary School in Vadakara, Koothattukulam, Ernakulam district, Kerala, and a KSRTC driver, suffered food poisoning after consuming food at a newly opened hotel. The incident occurred on the hotel’s inauguration day when a local vendor named Salim Kitchen served food, including a 99-rupee biryani offer.

The affected students sought medical treatment at various hospitals, and the local health department alerted authorities. Initial investigations revealed that unhygienic cooking practices and improper food storage contributed to the contamination. Local authorities, including Vadakara Panchayat and municipal officials, quickly launched an investigation.

Hotel Closure and License Issues

Food Safety Officer Chaitra Bharathi issued a closure notice to the hotel on Koothattukulam Market Road for operating without a valid license. The food safety team from Thrikkakara inspected the hotel and found that it lacked the necessary documentation, including a health card and operating license. They also discovered that the food was not being prepared or served according to health and safety standards.

Medical Care and Ongoing Investigation

The four students and the KSRTC driver, who are still undergoing medical treatment, were affected after consuming the biryani on the hotel’s opening day. Following media coverage of the incident, the State Health Department, led by Deputy District Medical Officer Dr. Rajan, conducted a follow-up inspection. Despite requests, the hotel owner failed to provide the required licenses. The health department issued notices to both the hotel owner and the municipal authorities. They also collected food and water samples from the hotel for further testing.

Public Concerns and Municipality Response

Despite the municipality’s initial claim of no complaints, public figures raised concerns about the hotel operating without a valid license. The health department is conducting a detailed investigation into the matter and will take further action against the hotel if it is found guilty.
