Report
On Wednesday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched a new digital tool that enables consumers to report misleading claims on food labels directly. This initiative, aligned with FSSAI’s Advertisement and Claims Monitoring Committee (AMC), aims to strengthen on-the-ground regulatory oversight and promote accountability across the food industry.
Consumers can now file complaints about deceptive or false assertions made on packaged food products through this digital tool, the Food Safety Connect mobile app or via the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) website. This user-friendly reporting feature allows individuals to contribute to transparency, safeguard consumer rights, and support food safety regulations nationwide.
Easy Submission for Faster Action
The digital tool simplifies the complaint process by allowing users to submit essential details such as:
- A front-of-pack image showing the misleading claim
- The manufacturer’s FSSAI license or registration number
- An e-commerce link if the product is available online
These submissions will help regulatory authorities take swift, evidence-based action against non-compliant Food Business Operators (FBOS).
Supporting Honest Food Labelling
FSSAI’s regulatory framework mandates that all food-related claims must be honest, clear, significant, and non-deceptive. Any assertions about nutritional or health benefits must be supported by scientific evidence. This initiative complements the ongoing efforts of the Advertisement and Claims Monitoring Committee, which regularly reviews food labels and advertisements for regulatory compliance. By encouraging public participation, FSSAI aims to enhance its monitoring capabilities and uphold labelling integrity.
Citizen Participation Encouraged
“The new reporting system empowers consumers to act as the eyes and ears of the food safety authority,” FSSAI stated in its official release. The agency urges every citizen to take part in this initiative to promote transparency and integrity in food labelling and contribute to a healthier, more informed India. The Food Safety Connect app is available for download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
