Key Update
A Gurugram resident has raised a serious food safety concern after allegedly discovering a glove inside a sandwich ordered via Zomato. The customer, Satish Sarawagi, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), shared the incident on social media on Tuesday, tagging Zomato, Zomato Care, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). He described the discovery as “unacceptable” and flagged it as a critical hygiene lapse.
Zomato Reacts Within 30 Minutes
Zomato responded promptly, expressing shock and issuing an apology. In a statement, Zomato Care acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and said it had escalated the matter to the concerned restaurant partner for immediate investigation. “We’re absolutely shocked to hear about this. Please allow us some time to investigate—we’ll follow up with you shortly,” Zomato Care replied publicly.
Not an Isolated Case
This incident adds to a growing list of food hygiene complaints linked to online food delivery platforms. Earlier this year, in January, a Bengaluru customer reportedly found a live worm inside a FreshMenu meal box, also delivered through Zomato. A video showing the worm crawling in one of the boxes quickly went viral, sparking outrage.
Growing Scrutiny on Food Delivery Hygiene
With the food delivery sector booming, incidents like these have led to renewed scrutiny of hygiene standards followed by cloud kitchens and restaurant partners. The FSSAI has urged all platforms to ensure stricter quality control, especially as consumer complaints rise.
