Kollam district has secured first place in the fourth phase of the national-level ‘Eat Right Challenge’ for 2024–25, winning the Food Safety Award for the third consecutive time.
The district earned the top ranking for its strong and consistent implementation of food safety initiatives. Authorities carried out food safety registration and licensing drives, conducted regular inspections and food sample collection, and ensured strict compliance across food establishments.
Training and Capacity Building for Food Businesses
Officials organised training programmes for food business operators to strengthen awareness and compliance with food safety regulations and best practices. Kollam implemented the Eat Right Campus programme across institutions, including anganwadis, and promoted safe and healthy eating habits among students through the Eat Right School initiative.
Ensuring Safe Food in Public and Religious Spaces
The district ensured safe food practices in places of worship through the Bhog scheme, monitored the quality of fruits and vegetables sold in markets, and enforced food safety standards at railway station eateries under the Eat Right Station initiative. In recognition of these efforts, the National Food Safety Authority selected Kollam as the best district in Kerala. Health Minister Veena George presented the award to Food Safety Assistant Commissioner A. Sakeer Hussain.
