Overview
A 42-year-old man died after developing severe health complications following the consumption of toddy and fish head curry from a toddy shop in Kottayam. The deceased, Jyothish, a resident of Choolabhagam in Kumarakom, was among a group of seven friends who reportedly consumed the food and drink on Saturday. Five others from the group remain under medical treatment.
Group Developed Symptoms Hours After Consumption
According to reports, three friends who had recently returned from the Gulf travelled from Kumily to Kumarakom to meet friends and spend time together. The group purchased toddy and fish head curry from the Parippu Thollayiram Toddy Shop and later consumed them while seated on a shikara boat.
Within hours, several members of the group developed symptoms such as vomiting and physical discomfort. Authorities rushed them for medical treatment. One of the affected individuals continues to receive treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
One Person Remains Critical
Jyothish, a resident of Choolabhagam in Kumarakom, later succumbed to his illness. Five others from the group continue to receive treatment, while one person remains under intensive care. Health officials are closely monitoring the condition of the affected individuals.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Following Jyothish’s death, police registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation into the incident. The Food Safety Department also inspected the toddy shop and collected samples for further examination.
Officials have shifted Jyothish’s body to Kottayam Medical College for a post-mortem examination. Authorities expect the report to determine the exact cause of death. The group included residents of Kumarakom and Kumily, and police confirmed that all of them were friends. Based on the complaint received, both the police and the Food Safety Department carried out inspections at the toddy shop as part of the ongoing investigation.
