FDA Tightens Milk Sector Rules to Boost Food Safety

FDA Enforces Stricter Compliance Across the Milk Supply Chain

The Maharashtra FDA issues a detailed compliance order covering the entire milk supply chain. It directs collection centres, chilling units, transporters, processors, distributors, and retailers to follow strict hygiene, sanitation, and quality control standards. The FDA requires food businesses to maintain clean handling environments, use food-grade equipment, and implement proper sanitation routines. It also stresses regular maintenance and monitoring to prevent contamination at every stage.

Regulators Push for Improved Traceability and Record-Keeping

The order instructs stakeholders to maintain accurate records and ensure full traceability of milk batches. This helps track the movement of milk from production to retail, strengthening accountability in case of safety issues. The FDA warns that violations of the new rules can attract penalties of up to ₹10 lakh. Authorities may also suspend or cancel licences of businesses that fail to meet the required food safety standards.

Regulators Aim to Reduce Adulteration and Improve Consumer Safety

Through stricter enforcement, the FDA aims to curb milk adulteration and improve overall product safety. The move strengthens consumer trust and encourages better hygiene practices across the dairy sector.
