Mysuru Officials Seize 106 kg of Suspected Artificially Coloured Green Peas

Key Update

Food safety officials in Mysuru seized 106 kg of suspected artificially coloured green peas during an inspection at the city’s wholesale vegetable market on MG Road. They suspect vendors used artificial colouring agents to make the peas appear fresher and more attractive to buyers.

Officials Seize Samples During Early Morning Inspection

A team led by SL Ravindra, Designated Officer of the Food Safety Department, began the inspection at 4.30 a.m. on Saturday. The team seized the suspected green peas from six vendors and collected one statutory sample along with three survey samples for laboratory testing. The laboratory will determine whether the peas contain unauthorised colouring agents.

Authorities Continue Crackdown

The inspection marked the third enforcement drive against the sale of artificially coloured green peas at the market. The Food Safety Department said it will take action against vendors who violate food safety regulations after receiving the laboratory results.

Officials Warn Vendors About Health Risks

During the inspection, the team also educated around 25 vendors about the health risks of using unauthorised colour additives. Officials said some vendors reportedly buy dried green peas and apply artificial colouring to restore or enhance their green appearance before selling them. This practice can mislead consumers into believing the peas are fresher than they actually are.

Consumers Can Watch for Warning Signs

Officials advised consumers to place green peas in a transparent container of water and gently stir them. If the water turns green, it may indicate the use of an artificial colouring agent. However, only laboratory analysis can confirm whether unauthorised colours are present.

Why It Matters

Artificially colouring fresh vegetables misleads consumers and violates food safety regulations. Regular inspections help identify unsafe practices, improve compliance, and protect consumers from unauthorised food additives.
