Kerala Puts 2,300+Toddy Shop Kitchens Under Food Safety Watch

Key Update

The Kerala Excise Department and the Food Safety Department will jointly inspect kitchens in toddy shops across the state to improve hygiene and ensure compliance with food safety regulations. According to the Food Safety Authority, 2,310 of Kerala’s 3,913 licensed toddy shops serve food alongside toddy. Most of these establishments operate from rented buildings, where limited space often restricts proper kitchen infrastructure.

Officials said the initiative aims to improve food hygiene and ensure that consumers receive safe, high-quality meals despite these structural limitations.

Weekly Surprise Inspections Planned

The joint enforcement drive will run alongside the Excise Department’s Operation Shuddhi, a statewide campaign to curb the production and sale of illicit liquor. As part of the initiative, the Excise Department will deploy three special enforcement squads in each district, while Food Safety officials will conduct surprise inspections of toddy shop kitchens. Authorities plan to inspect at least six establishments every week to monitor hygiene standards and regulatory compliance.

Poorly Maintained Kitchens Face Action

Officials will direct operators and licence holders to upgrade unhygienic kitchens and address food safety deficiencies. Authorities may order the closure of kitchens that fail to rectify serious violations or pose a risk to public health.

Food Safety Rules Apply to Toddy Shops

The Food Safety Department clarified that kitchens in toddy shops must comply with the same food safety regulations that apply to hotels and restaurants. Consumers can report food safety violations or unhygienic conditions by calling the Food Safety Authority’s toll-free helpline: 1800 425 1125.
