Kerala Human Rights Commission Orders Regular Inspections of Eateries

Report

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has ordered the Food Safety Department to regularly inspect eateries nationwide and seize substandard or expired food items. Commission Chairperson Alexander Thomas highlighted the importance of strict legal action against establishments that violate the Food Safety Act.

Call for Monthly Food Safety Checks

The commission issued this directive to the Assistant Commissioner of the Food Safety Department in Ernakulam, following a complaint from social activist T.N. Prathapan. Prathapan had called for monthly checks on the quality of cooking ingredients, including oil, water, fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat, particularly in large hotels.

The Food Safety Department has already submitted a report detailing inspections conducted in Ernakulam district. In addition, local police, in collaboration with the revenue and local self-government departments, conduct bi-weekly nighttime roadside eateries (thattukadas) inspections.
