Shimla District Launches Food Safety Campaign on National Highway

Report

The Shimla district administration has launched a special awareness campaign to promote food safety and hygiene along the National Highway stretch from Shoghi to Narkanda. Running until January 10, the initiative educates shopkeepers, hotel owners, dhaba operators, and street vendors on maintaining food quality and adhering to regulations.

Campaign Ensures Food Safety During Tourist Season

The district launched the campaign after a district-level advisory committee meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anupam Kashyap. With increased tourist traffic during the peak season, the initiative ensures that food served in Shimla and nearby tourist spots meets safety standards. The campaign emphasizes the importance of hygiene and food safety, especially in public spaces.

Food Safety on Wheels” to Conduct Inspections

The campaign includes a “Food Safety on Wheels” mobile lab that will carry out surprise inspections along the highway. The lab will collect and test food samples from various establishments to ensure quality and safety. The initiative also covers food served in public spaces such as schools, hospitals, PG accommodations, hostels, and Anganwadi centres to ensure compliance with prescribed standards.

No Tolerance for Substandard Food in Public Programs

DC Kashyap stressed that the administration will not tolerate substandard or unsafe food, particularly in programs like mid-day meals. He urged food service providers to prioritize food quality and ensure no compromises are made. Kashyap also encouraged the public to report any food safety concerns directly to the administration.

Advancements in Food Safety and Standards

In collaboration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the district has made significant progress in improving food safety. From January 1 to December 7 this year, the district issued 2,499 registrations and 289 licenses to food-related businesses. Shimla City, under the Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction, granted 415 registrations and 534 licenses. Additionally, over 300 street vendors have received training in safe food practices.
