Shops in Kochi Fined for Food Safety Violations

Introduction

Kochi: The food safety department booked over 180 establishments in the district for various food safety violations found in a special drive conducted during the Onam season. As many as 185 shops, including eateries, were found committing food safety violations during a drive conducted between Sept 9 and 13 in Ernakulam. Special squads of the department conducted inspections in 464 shops, including groceries, bakeries, eateries and other facilities associated with food. Food safety officials said most eateries were found flouting hygiene norms, especially during the Onam season when they prepare dishes by setting up temporary facilities.

Official Statement

“We found most eateries flouting norms, Schedule 4 of the food safety standards (licensing and registration of food business) regarding hygiene. Since it was Onam, many people were preparing dishes, including payasam, eyeing Onam sales. But they were found to be done in unhygienic conditions. We served them notices to rectify the conditions. Besides, the officials have collected food samples for testing. It also includes milk,” said an official.

Analysis

The majority of food safety violations were discovered in areas in and around Thrikkakara, Ernakulam, Aluva, and Kalamassery food zones, where the majority of food businesses operate. During that time, civil supplies and legal metrology departments also carried out special campaigns to stop food adulteration and prevent the public from being charged excessively for products.
