Kochi Hostels Flagged for Major Food Safety Violations

Key Update

A district-wide inspection of 229 hostels last week revealed significant food safety violations across several facilities in Kochi. Officials found that many Kochi hostels were preparing food in unhygienic environments, putting students and residents at risk. Inspectors issued rectification notices to 67 hostels for minor violations. However, they identified 28 hostel canteens for serious breaches of Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011. These canteens now face penalties for non-compliance.

Major Gaps in Hygiene and Documentation

Officials reported that several hostels lacked proper waste disposal systems, medical certificates for food handlers, and mandatory water quality test certificates. The water test—required every six months—checks both chemical and microbiological safety parameters.  “We will impose fines after reviewing the explanations from the 28 canteens. If their replies are unsatisfactory, we will proceed with penalties. Inspections will continue in the coming days,” a food safety officer said.

Rising Food Poisoning Cases Prompt Stricter Checks

The district has recently reported multiple food poisoning incidents, prompting authorities to intensify inspections in hostels and community kitchens to ensure compliance.
