Report
Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced in the Assembly on Tuesday that the Food Safety Wing has set up night patrols to inspect food safety and hygiene in all eateries, including ‘thattukadas’ (roadside stalls).
In response to Ahmed Devarkovil’s concerns about hygiene and safety standards in roadside eateries, Ms George highlighted the rising cases of food and waterborne illnesses. She stated that the Health Department actively promotes awareness about the importance of food safety. To address these issues, the Food Safety Department will increase inspections to ensure that all food establishments follow proper hygiene practices.
Health Cards for Food Handlers
Ms. George also noted that the state requires health cards for all food handlers, despite no specific mention in the 2011 Food Safety and Standards Act. She assured the House that the government would take strict action against medical practitioners who issue fake health cards or fail to conduct necessary checks before issuing them.
