ICAR-CTCRI Expands Sweet Potato Farming to Boost Food Security

The ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) and Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CTCRI) has developed a novel biofortified sweet potato variety, marking a significant advancement in tribal food security. Known as SP-95/4, this pink-skinned, orange-fleshed tuber has completed final trials in several states, including Odisha, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Kerala.

High Crop Production in Kerala

In the tribal region of Attappady, Kerala, the newly introduced sweet potato has produced an excellent harvest, greatly benefiting local farmers. This success stems from a partnership between ICAR-CTCRI’s Rainbow Diet Programme, which focuses on tuber crops, and Kudumbashree’s ‘Punarjeevanam’ project.

CTCRI Director G. Byju emphasized that the variety’s bright orange flesh contains 8 mg of beta-carotene per 100g, making it highly nutritious and essential in addressing vitamin A deficiency, a persistent problem in many tribal areas. The tubers, which average 300 grams in weight, have a fusiform shape, making them ideal for processing and commercial use.

Growth Strategies

Following the successful trials, ICAR-CTCRI and Kudumbashree plan to expand sweet potato cultivation in Attappady to 100 acres by the end of 2025. This expansion aims to enhance food security and provide additional income opportunities for local farmers. Launched in 2023, the Rainbow Diet Programme seeks to promote the production and consumption of biofortified tubers in tribal communities to address malnutrition and encourage balanced diets. In 2024, the initiative expanded under the ‘Punarjeevanam’ project, leading to increased utilization of nutrient-rich crops like sweet potatoes.

Health and Financial Benefits

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a nutrient-dense tuber rich in vitamins, particularly beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. Growing this crop offers a sustainable solution to nutritional deficiencies and supports public health efforts.
